Last month, there were hundreds of articles published when a Lulzsec member ‘Recursion’ were caught. It was a big news because many big companies were trembling because of this super hidden Lulzsec group. Are they really hackers or just want to scare these big flesh eaters is a different story. The story is how it could possible to catch Recursion (Cody Kretsinger) who is the member of most famous underground world. Proofs shows that his VPN provider played a big role in his arrest.

Few days back, TorrentFreak uncovered a story on Recursion’s arrest. They said that Recursion or Cody Kretsinger used a VPN service to carry attack on Sony. By the orders of court, that UK-based VPN provider provided the complete details of alleged attacker. By matching the time-stamp with IP address, it was possible to catch Cody. And the most interesting thing is Cody used famous HideMyAss VPN. HideMyAss did not really do what they have claimed for. They could not stand for their words and they hands out the details of alleged attacker on Sony: Cody.

People uses these VPN services to remain anonymous on Internet no matter what people do. When we use VPN, we think that we are hidden on Internet and no body, organization or agency can track us and the main purpose to provide VPN services also sits under this definition. If people using VPN still can be caught, what the reason to use VPNs and even paid for subscription.  So, before signing any subscription for VPN, ask that particular company what is the level of anonymity.

TorrentFreak has written a detailed article about these VPN providers and they clearly distinguished between VPNs who really care about your anonymity and those who do not. They ask the following two simple questions from different VPN providers and then stack them according to the replies. I have created a table based on the answers of VPN providers who really care about your anonymity.

1. Do you keep ANY logs which would allow you or a 3rd party to match an IP address and a time stamp to a user of your service? If so, exactly what information do you hold?
2. Under what jurisdictions does your company operate and under what exact circumstances will you share the information you hold with a 3rd party?

Instead of writing more about these VPN providers, you should read more on TorrentFreak. There you will find more who care and who do not care.

Thanks for the comparison Perti. It’s sad to see how people take advantage of wonderful services like VPN and use them for illegal things.
