Sometimes hardware developments are so weird they never cease to surprise us. We have a new hardware that’s going onto the market most recently and ain’t it strangely awesome? Behold, meet XtremKey, supposedly the world’s first ever super flash drive!

XtremKey is manufactured by Lacie, a manufacturer in computer peripherals specializing in external storage solutions and color monitors. This company has won numerous award, including the invention of key-shaped USB flash drives.

So what exactly makes XtremKey so strong and interesting?

1. XtremKey is PC and Mac compatible

2. XtremKey is made with zamac, a metal alloy composed of zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper. Zamac’s so strong, it can withstand the pressure of a 10-ton truck! This zamac is fashioned into a 2mm-thick pipe casing sealed with wear-resistant screw threads and a rubber O-ring, which practically makes it water-proof as well.

3. XtremKey can survive five meter drops (16.4 feet), water pressure of up to 100 metres, extreme temperatures ranging from -58 up to 392 degrees Fahrenheit (-50 to +200 Celsius) and well, physical wear and tear which commonly occurs to many flash drives out there.

4. XtremKey’s extreme toughness does not sacrifice its performance either. Its size, pretty much the same as our usual flash drives, are also equipped with hi-speed USB 2.0 interface, cross-platform compatibility and outstanding transfer speeds with writing speeds up to 30 Mb/s and reading up to 40 Mb/s

Almost certainly, such an incredible hardware always comes at a hefty price: to be released in August this year, it has a starting price of $50 for 8GB in LaCie’s online store. Like all flash drive models, it will feature a variety of capacities up to 64GB.

There’s even a cool video advertising XtremKey: I wonder whether it is bomb-proof or bullet-proof lol!

For the moment, i can’t imagine anyone other than military forces and science expedition teams requiring this sort of flash drive. Furthermore, I’d say most users don’t suffer from damaged USBs–they suffer from the loss of USB‘s. Regardless, if you think you are an adventurous people living on the wild side, or that you simply want to amuse people, XtremKey will be just the perfect buy for you!
